Nurturing Authentic Leadership: Insights from Beacon Health System's Lead Self First, Then Lead Others session
On February 7, 2024, Clinicians enrolled in our Beacon Health System Leadership Academy participated in a transformative session led by esteemed HLI facilitators Jacquie Jordan and Margie West. The session titled “Lead Self First, Then Lead Others” ignited profound discussions on the essence of authentic leadership and its indispensable role in organizational triumph. We can’t lead others before leading self.
Exploring Key Objectives:
- Leading from Within: At the core of the session was the notion that effective leadership emanates from self-awareness and authenticity. Participants delved into their inner landscapes, uncovering core values, motivations, and life experiences that shape their leadership journey.
- Authenticity and Transparency: The discourse emphasized the power of authenticity in leadership. Leaders were challenged to transcend the façade of professionalism and embrace vulnerability by revealing their authentic selves – strengths, limitations, and all. This transparency fosters trust and credibility among team members.
- Courageous Leadership: True leadership requires courage – the courage to confront one’s truths and vulnerabilities. By fostering deep honesty with oneself, leaders can cultivate genuine connections and inspire trust within their teams.
- Distinguishing Leadership and Management: Attendees gained insights into distinguishing between the activities of leadership and management, understanding when each is most needed to drive organizational success.
- Personal Energy and Well-being: The session underscored the pivotal role of personal energy and well-being in leadership effectiveness. Leaders explored steps to better care for their well-being, recognizing its profound impact on their ability to lead.
- Emotional Intelligence: Participants identified specific areas of Emotional Intelligence for improvement and delineated actionable steps to enhance their emotional awareness and regulation, fostering stronger leadership capabilities.
- Building Trust: Trust emerged as a cornerstone of leadership success. Leaders explored strategies to build and nurture trust within their teams, recognizing its foundational role in fostering collaboration and achieving shared goals.
Overall improvement on the identified session objectives was 60%. Satisfaction with the session was 94% and 100% of participants recommended the session for others.
The training program received positive and diverse feedback from participants. Key themes include:
- The importance of distinguishing between leadership and management roles while focusing on trust-building (P1)
- The value of self-reflection, particularly on trust issues (P2)
- The effectiveness of allocated time for reflection, with praise for the photo story activity (P3)
Participants also noted a deepened understanding of their emotional intelligence (P4), appreciated the relevance of the emotional scoring survey (P5), the impact of storytelling (P7), interactive exercises, and peer discussions (P8) were highlighted for their efficacy. The photo self-sharing activity was specifically commended (P9), and gratitude was expressed for the feedback received during the training (P10). Connecting with other physicians was emphasized as valuable for fostering a sense of community (P11).
Overall, the feedback reflects a comprehensive and positive response to the various elements of the training program, indicating its effectiveness in addressing a range of personal and professional development needs.
