What Is Physician Coaching?
Physician coaching is a co-creative development process used to drive awareness and accountability to accelerate improvement in leadership performance.
It is a partnership forged with physicians marked by trust, confidentiality and transparency to bring the best of them personally and professionally. Coaching is not residual work because someone is broken and not doing or behaving well.
Different from mentoring, the role of a coach is to ask questions that encourage and empower physicians to reflect, discover, and then act in ways that move them toward the agreed upon goal.

We have the depth and breadth of experiences to coach physicians and physician leaders at all levels in the organization, multi-specialty groups, and private practices.
We coach Chief Medical Officers, Chiefs of Staff, Chairs and Vice Chairs, Service Line Leaders, Dyad Leaders, Researchers, Physicians in the trenches, Private Practice Physicians, Physicians at insurance companies and Physicians in the pharmaceutical industry.
Types of Coaching We Provide to Physicians and Physician Leaders
- Transition Coaching – We partner with physicians to develop more confidence to transition from a clinician to a clinician-leader leading their peers.
- Group Coaching – Coaching a group of physicians (from different departments or the same department) on professional development, career development and/or specific clinical and operational goals.
- Service Line Coaching – Partnering with physicians from a specific service line to work on service line culture, team dynamic, process and performance improvement.
- Team Coaching – Partnering with a team of physicians from a specific department or service line to improve team dynamics such as trust, clarity, communication and conflict management.
- MEC Coaching – Partnering with Medical Executive Committee (chairs of departments) to improve MEC direction and dynamics such as trust, clarity, communication and effective MEC meetings.
- Chairs, Chief of Staff Coaching – Partnering to develop more confidence leading their department or medical staff. Focusing on wellbeing, caring for self, self-awareness, goal setting, communication, leading change, delegation, and performance feedback.
- CMO Coaching – Executive level coaching (Link to executive coaching page) to empower CMOs to lead strategically and influence the medical staff. This coaching focuses on being a bridge between executive team, board, and medical staff.
- Physician Performance Coaching – Some physicians find it difficult to deliver on expectations (clinically, operationally, or team leadership). We partner with the physician to help transform their performance. This is usually a three way agreement with their immediate supervisor.
- Physician Disruptive Behavior Coaching – Partnering with physicians that are facing difficult situations and whose behaviors have not been optimal or in line with organizational values and culture. We approach the partnership with empathy, curiously and in-person shadowing to maximize the coaching process.
- Career Coaching – We partner with physicians to explore their passion, desired career direction and development of a strategy and plan for their professional and personal lives.
- Physician Wellbeing Coaching – Partnering with physicians to explore their passion, identify their sources of stress and burnout and to develop strategies to address their triggers and hassle factors.
