AMA Physician Leadership Academy

The AMA Physician Leadership Academy is a comprehensive, year-long leadership development program delivered in partnership between the American Medical Association (AMA) and HLI.
Designed for early- to mid-career physicians, this program provides a structured approach to developing the leadership capabilities required to navigate today’s evolving healthcare environment. Participants engage in a combination of interactive learning, applied practice, and peer collaboration to strengthen their effectiveness as physician leaders.

Over 12 months, participants build actionable leadership skills guided by experienced faculty and physician executives. Each session introduces practical tools and frameworks that can be immediately applied to real-world leadership challenges and day-to-day responsibilities.
Program Experience
Participants engage in a structured, cohort-based experience that integrates learning and application:
Interactive Leadership Sessions
Live sessions introduce essential frameworks and concepts aligned to healthcare leadership.
Small Group Professional Facilitation
Participants engage in facilitated small group sessions designed to deepen learning, strengthen reflection, and support application in a collaborative environment.
Capstone Project
Participants apply program insights through a longitudinal Capstone Project, developing a meaningful initiative aligned with their role and organization.
Peer Learning Cohort
The program fosters a national network of physician leaders, supporting ongoing collaboration and professional connection.

Alternating interactive sessions and small group professional facilitation - Approximately 3 hours per month

This program is designed for physicians in entry- to mid-level leadership roles, including those who are:
- Recently promoted or preparing for leadership roles
- Serving in formal or situational leadership capacities
- Seeking to strengthen their leadership skills in preparation for future opportunities

Health system leaders are encouraged to nominate high-potential physicians for participation.

Application Requirements

- One letter of support
Applications are reviewed to ensure strong cohort engagement and alignment with program expectations. Space is limited.
Once accepted, participants will be asked to submit the program fee to confirm their place.

- Non-Members: $7,595
The program is open to both AMA members and non-members. AMA members receive a discounted rate.
