Navigating the New Year: An Uncommon Approach to Goal Setting
With every new year, tangible anticipation of fresh starts lingers in the air. It’s an opportune moment to look back on the past and map out our path forward into the year ahead.
In the perennial debate surrounding the efficacy of setting new year goals, one enduring truth emerges—the wisdom of planning is an undeniable factor in achieving success. As Sun Tzu said in the Art of War: The victorious strategist/leader only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks to victory, emphasizing the critical role of planning.
In our capacity as leaders, planning becomes the North Star that guides our teams through the vast expanse of possibilities. People inherently crave direction, a purpose behind their actions, and a connection to the overarching mission of the organization and the world. The advent of a new year serves as a poignant reminder of the need for alignment and a refocus on what truly matters.
On one hand, some say New Year resolutions rarely succeed and tend to be broken. But this is an issue of commitment and not that the process of setting goals does not work. It is the lack of commitment or accountability that needs to be addressed.
On the other hand, some say that annual goals are too lofty and there should be micro goals set regularly instead. This is semantic. Effective annual goals are to be connected to long term visions and micro goals/action plans are to be set every 90 days. As an ancient proverb says: Vision without action is a daydream, action without a vision is a nightmare.
On a personal level, I adhere to a ritual of reflecting and goal-setting. It is a holistic approach that involves revisiting my life strategy map, reflecting on my mission, adjusting my long-term vision, and setting tangible goals across critical domains such as health, family, finances, and community.
At the workplace, the journey towards alignment and unity begins with the creation of a Line of Sight—a one-page summary detailing the organization’s vision, mission, values and this coming year’s top priorities and key actions. Team members then align their goals, define measures of success, and craft 90-day action plans, creating a synchronized rhythm of progress.
On the home front, my family and I engage in a collective goal-setting outing, fostering open communication and shared aspirations. We reflect on individual goals and weave them into a collective tapestry that becomes the roadmap for the upcoming year.
Now, turning the spotlight to you: what is your unique practice for goal-setting in the new year—for your life, your work, and your family? Your experiences and insights are a valuable addition to this collective journey of growth and self-discovery.
