Foundation Health Partners – Process Improvement Session
In today’s difficult financial challenges in healthcare, process improvement and simplification are THE MOST IMPORTANT LEVERS that can help with productivity, reducing waste and improving clinical and financial outcomes. It is estimated that 30-50% of healthcare cost is due to waste and inefficiencies. Yet, physicians have been minimally engaged in the improvement process because organizations tend to make that process very complicated and filled with jargon and complex tools (Lean Six Sigma, Kaizen, Black Belts, PDSA…)
We believe that the best way to expose waste and complexity in healthcare is by EMPOWERING PHYSICIANS AND NURSES with simple tools and methods to visually document the waste and complexity and engage others in improving it. SIMPLE! YES! IT HAS TO BE SIMPLE!!
This past week, HLI CEO Mo Kasti had the privilege of facilitating a Continuous Process Improvement session for physician leaders the Foundation Health Partners as part of the Leadership Academy in Fairbanks, Alaska!
The hands-on session focused on the key principles of process improvement as well as the simplified processes and tools needed to successfully lead improvement efforts for FHP.
Physicians worked on many hassle factors such as:
- Patient wait time to get an appointment.
- Patient wait time in clinics.
- Reducing surgeon and patient wasted time due to missing information.
- Reducing delays in scheduling imaging due to wrong and incomplete orders leading to frustration.
- Reducing length of stay by engaging hospitalists.
It is AMAZING AND REWARDING to see physicians visually documenting the process with a simple flow chart, labeling steps with red, yellow and green to point out waste, and showing spaghetti charts indicating waste of movement. Giving them permission to ask WHAT IF questions to help imagine better states is empowering.
