Celebrating Excellence: 46 physicians and board members Graduate the Sharp Community Medical Group Strategic Leadership Academy

On February 8, 2024, HLI CEO, Mo Kasti joined the graduates and stakeholders from Sharp Community Medical Group in San Diego, CA for their leadership academy graduation.  This was the celebration of their year-long journey of transformation, growth, and leadership excellence.

Those in attendance were treated to an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Robert Cavagnol, President of St. Luke’s Clinic in Boise, Idaho. Dr. Cavagnol’s presentation, “Hardwiring Leadership in the Trenches,” resonated deeply with the audience, offering invaluable insights and wisdom garnered from years of experience in healthcare leadership.

The Sharp Community Medical Group Strategic Leadership Academy was a customized leadership development program specifically designed to meet the needs of 46 physicians and board members.  The culmination of this program stands as a testament to the power of physician leadership and collaboration in healthcare leadership.

A Year of Achievement: The Academy was not just a program; it was a commitment to leadership excellence. Over the course of the year, participants in two cohorts delved into a comprehensive curriculum designed to elevate their leadership skills, lead their peers effectively and drive group success. The program consisted of monthly hybrid development sessions and group leadership coaching.

Key Program Objectives

  1. Building High-Performance Foundations: The Academy laid the groundwork for high-performance boards, instilling the skills and insights necessary to steer the organization towards greatness.
  2. Leveraging Diversity and Strengthening Communication: Embracing diversity and harnessing the unique strengths of each board member became a cornerstone of the Academy’s ethos. Improved communication and collaboration fostered an environment of mutual respect and understanding.
  3. Leading Productive Board Meetings: Effective leadership begins in the boardroom. Through meticulous planning and strategic guidance, participants learned to lead highly productive board meetings that propelled the organization forward.
  4. Conflict Resolution: Conflict is an inevitable part of any organization, but the Academy equipped participants with the tools to navigate disagreements constructively, transforming conflict into an opportunity for growth.
  5. Inspiring Engagement in Change: Change is constant, and effective leaders are adept at inspiring others to embrace it. The Academy provided strategies for leading and inspiring engagement in change and improvement efforts, fostering a culture of innovation and adaptability.
  6. Systems Thinking: Understanding the interconnectedness of systems is paramount for driving meaningful change. Participants applied Systems Thinking principles to identify and address structures that hindered progress, paving the way for transformative shifts within the organization.
  7. Enhancing Leadership Presence: Leadership is not just about what you say, but how you say it. Participants honed their leadership presence and presentation skills, exuding confidence and charisma in every interaction.
  8. Effective Time Management and Delegation: Time is a precious commodity, especially for busy healthcare leaders. The Academy provided strategies for effectively managing commitments and priorities, ensuring that leaders had ample time to focus on what truly mattered.
  9. Promoting a Culture of Well-being: In the fast-paced world of healthcare, well-being is often overlooked. However, the Academy recognized its importance and provided participants with tactics for creating a culture of well-being within their teams, fostering resilience and camaraderie.

Feedback from Participants

Top 3 Takeaways:

  • Learned more about myself and my leadership style. Learned to be a better listener and more reflective in my conversations with others. Learned the value of getting input first before giving my opinion on things and asking others if they are interested in hearing my view rather than just offering it.

What new skills/behaviors are others observing in you?

  • My staff has actually mentioned that I seem a bit more engaged and have come back around to exhibiting the leadership skills that I know I have. I think after being in practice for 20 years and feeling a bit burnt out lately, I had started to check out and have thrown a lot of responsibility on my office manager. I have stepped in and taken back a bit of control, which I think is actually necessary and has been well received by my staff.
  • I feel that I am a better listener and I do not interrupt as much as I did before. I am better at explaining the ultimate goal. I am nicer to people that I work with overall.

What benefits would you describe when recommending the program?

Personal benefits:

  • This program helped me to have better relationship with my spouse and my children. It gave me insight to see things from their point of view without judging them or getting upset with them.
  • I felt I’ve been given permission to put myself first sometimes. Focus on taking care of my basic needs so I can be better for others.

Professional benefits:

  • More inspired to continue in leadership roles.
  • Mind opening experience. Thinking out of the box.
  • Help finding yourself as a leader, reinvigorating yourself and your practice.
  • I have more empathy and patience with people and I am better at presenting the final objective.
