Leader-as-Coach Training Overview
What is a “leader-as-coach?” A Leader-as-Coach leads others with a coaching mindset—one grounded in trust, empathy, and curiosity. Rather than directing or solving problems for others, the leader cultivates a safe environment where team members feel supported to reflect, explore, and grow.
They build strong, trusting relationships, listen deeply, and ask powerful questions that spark insight and ownership. Through co-creating solutions, focusing on lessons learned, and acknowledging both effort and results, the leader-as-coach helps teams get back on track, deliver results, handle challenges, retain talent, and continuously improve performance.
At its core, the Leader-as-Coach philosophy transforms leadership from managing tasks to empowering people—turning everyday interactions into opportunities for learning, growth, and lasting impact.

Leader-as-Coach Program Format
A Leader-as-Coach is able to:
- Establish a strong, trusting relationship with the coachee
- Make it safe to discuss issues
- Use empathy

- Co-create solutions with their coachee
- Focus on lesson learned
- Acknowledge efforts as well as results

Level 1 – Duration: 30 Hours
This program is designed to train leaders in fundamental coaching skills and the application of these in their work as leaders.
It includes 30 contact hours comprised of instructor-led education workshops, peer coaching circle meetings led by a Mentor-Coach, and outside of class assignments, such as reading, viewing, case study analysis, and final essay describing knowledge gained and skills learned and applied.
Level 2 – Duration: 45 Hours
The 45 hours total for this program are the 30 hours earned through the Level 1 training program plus 15 additional hours of coaching skills practice, supervision and assessment. The two certification credentials earned upon successful completion of this program are:
- The CTI Certified Leader-as-Coach (CTI-CLAC) credential – offered exclusively by CTI to elevate leadership capacity.
- The WABC Certified Leader-as-Coach™ (CLAC™) credential – a globally recognized credential that represents the highest quality leader-as-coach coaching training in the world.

Our WABC Accredited (Level 1 - Leader-as-Coach)™ mark means our program delivers the highest quality leader-as-coach coaching training in the world. To achieve this distinction, we participate in rigorous independent assessment and ongoing re-evaluation, designed exclusively for leader-as-coach coaching programs, to ensure we continue to offer high quality, evidence-based training rooted in real-world organizational and business needs. The Worldwide Association of Business Coaches™ (WABC™) is the leading global association committed to driving business coaching and leader-as-coach coaching excellence with robust, evidence-based practices.
