Key Takeaways from the 2018 AMGA Annual Conference

CTI was thrilled to be a part of the 2018 Annual AMGA Conference in March in Phoenix, Arizona. AMGA represents 175,000 physicians impacting 120 million patient lives! With more than 2,000 of these members attending the conference, there were plenty of brilliant minds to provide insight on healthcare’s most pressing issues.
Some standout themes, noted below, included transformation, disruption and burnout. While it’s clear that our patients are at the core of what we do, there is no doubt we have an obligation to do better – not only for those we serve, but also for ourselves.
AMGA 2018 – Key Takeaways
• HEALTHCARE IS UNDERGOING A TRANSFORMATION

CEO of Prevea Health, Ashok Rai, addressing the group about becoming free of the addiction of fee-for-service model
o It’s time to get ourselves free of the addiction of fee-for-service
o We need to start attacking the origin of bad health (e.g. Obesity)
o Patients deserve better quality and value
• YOUR ORGANIZATION NEEDS TO EMBRACE DISRUPTION TO SURVIVE
o Find a problem and solve it – not the other way around.
o When organizations take their eyes off customer needs, they lose. Remember Kodak film?
• DISRUPTION STARTS WITH REDEFINING: What Business Are We In?
o Netflix defined themselves as content delivery company, not a DVD company – focused on the changing needs of customers
o Amazon, Netflix, Uber were all disrupters – substitutes for more convenience
o McDonalds isn’t selling food, it’s selling convenience
o Suave: It isn’t deodorant, it’s self-confidence
o Success breeds failure because it encourages us not to change
o It’s important to innovate and incubate non-core ideas (e.g. Google Wind)
o Warby Parker disrupted eye glass industry by using pop up shops to test best locations
o We need to celebrate and reward failures to accelerate innovation
o Perceptive leaders attract talent because people are attracted to big vision (Elon Musk and Tesla)
o Status quo and uncertainty have a cost
o Reduce HASSLE FACTORS/Barriers to Access/Your Services : Make money by giving things away, by lowering the barrier to trial (i.e. Dropbox)
• WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT BURNOUT
o 51% of physicians are burned out
o There are many sources of burnout including communication, technology, hassle factors, culture and stress – only 3% due to compensation
o Professional growth is key to engaging physicians
o Cleveland Clinic uses Professionalism Consult in place of professional review (performance, alignment of goals, 360 on leaders)
o Cleveland Clinic replaced Meeting Day with Well-being Day
o Scribes increase physician satisfaction and reduce burnout
o Well-being Audit measures state of body, emotions, mind, and spirit
• EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP STILL MATTERS
o Healthcare deserves better leadership
o We need to invest in our physicians
o Physicians interrupt their patients on average every 7 seconds. We need to do better job of listening
o Emerging leaders need to be given opportunities to continue their professional journey alongside established mentors from high-performing healthcare organizations
o Women in healthcare leadership are connecting to share knowledge, skills, and experiences and to develop communities around specific topics for development
We were thrilled to sponsor the AMGA Emerging Leaders and Women in Leadership luncheon and evening reception!
