Leaders at Moffitt Cancer Center Better Prepared to Take on Healthcare Challenges After Graduating Academy

Fifteen health leaders from Moffitt Cancer Center are now better equipped to solve problems related to retaining talent, improving patient satisfaction and recruiting top physician scientists. The leaders graduated the Moffitt Cancer Center Leadership Academy on May 25, 2018 in Tampa, Florida.

The academy was launched in Tampa in May of 2017 and included on-site educational sessions, leadership coaching, partnerships with Moffitt colleagues, and collaboration in facility-specific improvement projects.

Three different project topics included Recruiting and Retaining Talented Post-Doctoral Fellows Through Enhancing the Educational Component of Moffitt’s Offering, Enhancing Patient Satisfaction, and Recruiting and Retaining Physician Scientists with a Physician Scientist Track.

By identifying challenges, developing strategies and working toward implementation, these projects yielded dramatic improvements including:

• 223% increase in new-user traffic to the ‘molecular oncology job opening’ on LinkedIn as part of the enhanced postdoctoral education visibility pilot
• 46% of new-patient slides reviewed by appointment date after implementation of medical assistance support pilot
• Process of obtaining records began 18 days prior to appointment as compared to 7 days prior after implementation of medical assistance support pilot

“I learned that to influence people, it is important to open up. I have always taken the opposite approach,” said one Academy graduate.

“I thought that to lead people, you have to show you were super-human. Now I realize that showing your humanity helps people connect with you and want to follow you.”

According to a post-graduation survey, 100 percent of Academy graduates would recommend the program to their peers.
