Forget About New Year Resolutions, Have a Personal Line of Sight
As the calendar turns to a new year, the air buzzes with the energy of fresh starts and possibilities. For many, this is a time to embrace New Year resolutions, setting lofty goals for personal and professional growth. Yet, year after year, a familiar pattern emerges: resolutions are made with enthusiasm, only to fizzle out as the months progress. Perhaps the problem isn’t the resolutions themselves but the framework through which we approach them.
It’s time to shift the narrative from fleeting resolutions to a more enduring and strategic approach: creating a Personal Line of Sight. This concept, developed by our organization, aligns personal long-term vision with actionable steps, ensuring focus and sustained momentum.
Why Resolutions Fall Short
New Year resolutions often fail because they lack structure, accountability, and alignment with broader life goals. According to a 2016 study, only 9% of people who set resolutions feel successful by year’s end. The success rate drops steadily over time: after one week, 75% are still on track; after one month, 64%; and after six months, only 46% remain committed. This disheartening trend underscores the need for a better approach—one that emphasizes clarity, alignment, and adaptability.
Without a clear connection between our actions and our overarching purpose, resolutions become empty promises. This disconnect highlights the importance of integrating a robust planning system—one that bridges aspirations and daily actions.
What Is a Personal Line of Sight?
In organizational settings, a Line of Sight serves as a one-page roadmap that encapsulates an entity’s vision, mission, values, and key priorities. It ensures that every team member’s actions align with the larger organizational goals. Translating this to a personal context involves crafting a strategy that connects your long-term aspirations to short-term actions, with clearly defined milestones along the way.
For example, consider a personal vision of achieving optimal health. The corresponding Line of Sight might include quarterly fitness benchmarks, weekly meal plans, and daily exercise routines. By breaking the vision into manageable and measurable components, the path to success becomes clear and achievable.
Write Yourself a Letter Instead
Part of developing a Personal Line of Sight, is to write yourself a letter dated a year from today. This exercise taps into your Positive Emotional Attractors, helping you focus on what truly matters. In your letter, congratulate yourself on living your purpose, achieving your goals, and overcoming challenges. Reflect on the values you upheld, the relationships you nurtured, and the growth you achieved. Here’s a sample outline:
Dear Me,
- Congratulations, I am so proud of you for:
- Living my purpose.
- Accomplishing the following: [health, relationships, etc.].
- Overcoming the following challenges.
- Connecting with the following people whom I care about and love.
- Living my values of [specific values].
- Taking care of the following priorities.
- Stop doing/feeling/being the following.
- Learning the following lessons.
- Growing in the following ways.
Save your letter electronically or print it out and place it where you’ll see it regularly. Review it monthly or quarterly, rating your progress on a scale of 1 to 10. Celebrate your efforts and adjust your focus as needed. For areas where progress is lacking, ask yourself: Is this important to me? If so, what do I need to recommit to it?
The Power of Alignment and Celebration
Creating a Personal Line of Sight and writing a letter not only brings clarity to your goals but also fosters alignment in all areas of life. In my family, we make this a collective effort. Each year, we gather for a goal-setting outing, where we discuss individual aspirations and weave them into a shared vision. This practice strengthens communication and reinforces our collective purpose.
At work, the Line of Sight approach is equally transformative. Teams align their goals with organizational priorities, ensuring that every action contributes to the bigger picture. The result is a synchronized rhythm of progress and accountability.
No matter the method, the key is to celebrate the effort and progress, even if not all goals are achieved. As Buddha wisely said, “No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.” Let this year be your time to begin anew, armed with a clear vision, strategic planning, and unwavering commitment. Whether it’s improving health, deepening relationships, or advancing your career, a Personal Line of Sight or a heartfelt letter will guide you with clarity and purpose.
This year, don’t just dream about change—plan it, live it, and align your actions with your vision. The journey ahead is yours to navigate with purpose and precision.
