Nurturing Authentic Leadership: Insights from Shriners Hospitals for Children’s “From Physician to Physician-Leader” session
On February 8, 2024, senior senior physician leaders from across the Shriners Children’s network attended an interactive session led by Wes Avants, Executive Director with The Healthcare Leadership Institute. The session titled “From Physician to Physician-Leader” produced robust discussion on what is needed of physician-leaders in order to lead with excellence.
Exploring Key Objectives:
Recognize and build the core competencies and mindset of effective Physician-Leaders
- Understanding how the skills and perspectives that make one an excellent physician-leader differ from those that make one an excellent physician.
- Recognizing what is needed to shift between physician and physician-leader roles.
Effectively lead yourself so that you can better lead others
- Identifying the current state of physician well-being among those they lead
- Identifying factors that contribute to physician exhaustion and strategies for addressing those challenges in yourself and in those you lead.
Clearly communicate work expectations and requests
- Recognizing the ways in which leadership communication differs from clinical communication
- How to inspire others to want to help and how to provide greater clarity about what is expected.
Provide constructive feedback on what’s working well and what needs improvement
- What is needed to provide positive feedback that resonates as meaningful and is valued by team members.
- How to avoid creating defensiveness when leading a performance improvement conversation through compassionate curiosity.
