The Red Car Concept:  Winning with the Line of Sight as a Mental Compass for Your Future

Have you ever noticed that when you decide to buy a red car, suddenly red cars seem to appear everywhere? This isn’t magic or coincidence; it’s the result of a phenomenon known as the “frequency illusion.” Once something becomes significant to you, your brain starts tuning into it more readily. This principle extends far beyond car shopping – it’s a powerful tool for shaping your future and your team future.

When we set clear intentions, much like deciding to purchase a red car, we start noticing opportunities and patterns that align with our goals. Writing a letter to your future self or to your team future is a way to harness this principle. It’s not just about capturing a moment in time; it’s about turning your mental compass toward your goals and vision, setting yourself and your team on a path of deliberate progress.

Writing a Letter to Your Future Self or to Your Team

Imagine sitting down to write a letter to the version of you one year from now. What would you say? Perhaps you’d describe your dreams, goals, and values. Maybe you would congratulate yourself of your team on the accomplishments acheived. Maybe you’d outline the steps you plan to take or the obstacles you anticipate overcoming. This exercise is more than reflective; it’s strategic.

By articulating your aspirations, you create a roadmap. You’re signaling to your brain that these are the things that matter. And just like the red car, you’ll begin to see the signs and opportunities that align with your vision. Writing the letter isn’t just about the future; it’s a tool to sharpen your focus and recalibrate your present.

  • Congratulations, I am so proud of you for:
    • Living our purpose.
    • Accomplishing the following: [goals, relationships, etc.].
    • Overcoming the following challenges.
    • Connecting with the following people whom I care about and love.
    • Living our values of [specific values].
    • Taking care of the following priorities.
    • Stop doing/feeling/being the following.
    • Learning the following lessons.
    • Growing in the following ways.

Save your letter electronically or print it out and share it with your team.

 Line of Sight: The Strategy Behind the Concept

To truly leverage the red car concept, you need to integrate what I call a ” line of sight” strategy. This involves creating clarity around your goals and ensuring alignment in your and your team daily actions. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Write Your Future Letter
    Write to yourself as if you’ve already achieved your goals. Describe the journey, the milestones, and how it feels. Be detailed and vivid.
  2. Be in a Positive Celebration Mode
    Imagine you are celebrating with your team and you are reading this letter as your speech. Imagine and feel the positive feelings in the room! 
  3. Break Down Your Vision Into Big Rocks
    Transform your big-picture vision into actionable steps. What can you do today, this week, or this month to move closer? Use your line of sight to ensure these steps align directly with your vision.
  4. Track and Adjust
    Periodically revisit your letter and goals. Are you on track? If not, recalibrate. The act of revisiting keeps your focus sharp and ensures you’re aligned with your vision. Keep your personal line of sight updated as your goals evolve.
  5. Stay Open to Opportunity
    Once your mental compass is set, you’ll start seeing opportunities you might have missed before. Say yes to the ones that align with your goals. Your line of sight will help you discern which opportunities are worth pursuing.

From Vision to Reality

The red car concept reminds us that what we focus on grows. By writing to our future selves or our team and employing a line of sight strategy, we can align our present actions with our future aspirations. The result? A life lived with purpose and intentionality and tremendous progress and alignment of the team efforts.

So, grab a pen, open your notebook, and start writing your letter. Set your mental compass, and watch as the universe begins to fill your path with “red cars”—opportunities, people, and experiences that lead you exactly where you want to go.
